Wedding: Kim & Joe, Part 1

Some of you may remember Kim and Joe from their earlier e-session.  Their wedding took place on October 18, in Farmington Hills, MI.  They could not have picked a better date.  It was a glorious fall day, the leaves were in peak color, and it was just cool enough for the air to feel crisp, but not uncomfortably so.  As a photographer, I tend to follow a lot of photographers’ blogs and I’ve noticed a trend -  a LOT of wedding photographers mentioned their anniversaries last month.  Coincidence?  I don’t think so.  For the record, I decided long ago that if I ever get married, I will be an October bride as well.

The bride and groom got ready at the historical Longacre House, which is also where their reception took place.  This was our first time shooting in this venue and it was fantastic.  The location of getting reading photos can often be a toss up.  You’re not always lucky enough to shoot in a beautiful, turn-of-the-century home.  The girls had a luxurious suite made up of a large, sun-filled sleeping porch and sitting room, while the guys had their own suite with a widescreen TV and poker table.

Before I get too deep into this post, I want to give a quick shout out to Dustin Steller, creator of the Steller Lightroom Presets.  As photographers, it seems like there is always some new tool marketed towards us, so I have to admit, I was a little dubious when Andy announced that he had purchased these.  But I quickly fell in love.   When you are editing hundreds of pictures in one sitting, anything that makes the job faster and easier is appreciated. And at $40, these are some of the most reasonably priced presets I’ve seen.

Now, on with the photos!

How GORGEOUS is Kim in this photo?

I’m going to apologize now because I am going to post a LOT of dress pictures, but I was just happy that we had such a beautiful backdrop to frame them in.

As is always the case, the guys were done and ready to go in about two and a half minutes flat, so they ran outside with Andy.

Did I mention how much I loved the getting ready room?  It had a couple great mirrors that were really fun to work with.

This is one of my new favorite images:

Kim & Joe decided to see each other before the wedding.  I know this can be a point of contention for some couples - but as photographers, Andy and I LOVE when couples decide to do this.  It is often times more intimate than seeing each other in the church and especially for late season weddings, the light is usually better than it will be after the ceremony.

Joe & Kim recited vows to each other privately while their family looked on from a distance.

As you can see, the moms totally approved.   :)

Say hello to Miss Olivia, cutest flower girl ever!

A quiet moment before the ceremony started:

This post is getting so huge that I’m going to break it up into two parts.  The reception, featuring the best Dancing Ringbearer for 2008 will be coming soon.  I’m a detail-orientated type of girl though, so I’ll leave you with some detail shots.

What happens when you can’t choose between cake and cupcakes?  You get both!  Kim & Joe’s tree stump cake was adorable and the cupcakes were a hit as well.  The butterfly theme carried over into Kim’s bouquet.

Every new ring shot I take is my Favorite. Ring. Shot. Ever.  It is so true in the case of this wedding:

I will admit, I totally had a chip on my shoulder after I snapped that last one.  Andy is rolling his eyes right now reading this.

Kim & Joe - thank you SO much for letting us be a part of your perfect fall wedding.  There were so many great details from the handcarved pumpkins to the dinosaur-clad raffle ticket attendants and so much more that I can’t squeeze into one post alone.  We were thrilled to be part of your big day. :)

Stay tuned for Part 2!

Engagement Session - Jean & Elie

This engagement session was a BLAST!  We met up with Jean & Elie at the Henry Ford Estate in Dearborn.  Poor Elie, I think he was dreading this session a little bit.  For some guys, I think the idea of an engagement session is up there with getting a tooth pulled.  But our sessions are fun!  Formal, stuffy, posed portraits are NOT our thing, in case you couldn’t tell.  We are all about having fun and getting to know each other.  Enagement sessions are a great way to break the ice.  That’s why we include them in all our packages.

It turned out I was worried about nothing - Elie turned out to be hilarious and charming.  It’s funny how the guys I always am worried about end up being the biggest hams.  :)

Okay, seriously, how cute are they? This was SUCH a fun couple to shoot - usually it’s our job to keep our subjects laughing, but Elie did all the work for us.  At one point he started singing - that’s a West Park Photography first.  I get a tear in my eye just thinking about it.  :)

Can you tell this was a fun shoot?  :)

There were so many fun places to explore, and we were lucky to have the place pretty much to ourselves.

I love this one.

On the way to the Henry Ford Estate, Andy and I drove past this awesome field of sunflowers.  We coaxed Jean & Elie to going over there with us.  The sun was almost down at this point, but I think it was still worth the trip.

Jean & Elie’s wedding is next month and we can’t wait.  Did October fly by for everyone else?  This month has passed in a blink of an eye for me.

Sneak Peek: Kim & Joe

We’ve been busy, busy, BUSY and are still trying to play catch up!  Thank you to everyone for your patience!

Last Saturday we had the honor of photographing Kim & Joe’s wedding, who’s engagement pictures are in the post right below this one.

I have one more e-session to catch up on - Jean & Elie’s, which I should make a big dent in tonight.  But I had to post a little teaser.  I got some of my favorite dress pictures ever!  There is MUCH more to come!  Stay tuned!

E-Session: Kim & Joe

Kim & Joe are getting married tomorrow!  We met up with them a few weeks ago at Mill Race Historic Village in Northville for their engagement session.  It turns out we picked the busiest day possible to be there - a mall photographer was having outdoor sessions, so there were photographers and families everywhere.  It was crazy!

When I saw the rich  colors in this building, I had this shot in my mind and I’m geeked that it turned out exactly the way I was envisioning.  I love, love, love these colors.

They looked at each other like this all day:

It seems like even when we don’t plan it, we always end up shooting by water.

Now I know three ring pictures are overkill, but trying to decide between these was like trying to pick my favorite kid.  Not that I have kids.  But you know what I mean.

That last shot was another one that I just knew what I wanted, and I got the ring situated just right and I was too short, even on tippy toes to get the shot, so I had to pass off to Andy.  He says I don’t give him enough credit here, so there you go - this is Andy’s shot!

(Honestly, the weird thing is that when I’m editing, I can barely remember who shot what.)

Cuteness overload:

Whew….blogged in the nick of time!  We are excited for your wedding tomorrow!

Reception: Erika & Craig

Over the summer we got to meet Christie, the owner of Outstanding Weddings and Events, who is the bridal consultant for one of our June 2009 weddings.  (Speaking of which, June 2009 is filling up FAST!)  Christie’s brother Craig was married earlier this year in beautiful Presque Isle, MI.  It wasn’t until we were actually at the reception and I was thumbing through their wedding album that I realized that - Presque Isle is a tiny town in northern Michigan near Alpena, and somewhere I visited in the summers as a kid.  No one has heard of it.  It remains one of my favorite places on earth because it is unbelievably gorgeous.  In fact I can’t believe I haven’t made the point to visit since I’ve moved back from Florida.  I was so excited that Christie and her family knew the area - and they were excited that I knew the right the way to pronounce “Presque Isle”.  (I’m not telling, you’ll have to visit if you want to figure it out!)  :)

The family decided to have a reception back home and we were honored to be asked to photograph it.  So here we go.  First, how cute are Craig and his beautiful wife Erika?

Erika & Craig

The reception took place at Oakhurst Country Club in Clarkston, MI.  It was our first time shooting there and it was lovely.  Christie did an excellent job of arranging an elegant party - everything was gorgeous, from the place settings to the food, as you can see here.

Oakhurst

The reception started outside, and it was a beautiful evening and the trees surrounding Oakhurst made for a picturesque backdrop.  We were excited to see musicians setting up - we got some great photos of the band throughout the evening, but this is one of my favorites.  I loved this guy, I mean, how could you not?

Erika’s flowers were gorgeous:

So I have a confession.  The whole night Craig had been just a little too proper, you know what I mean?  I think maybe having two photographers in his face all night was a little much for the poor guy.  He was a tough subject to shoot candids of.  So when it was time for the cake cutting, I approaced his daughter and whispered into her ear “Get some frosting on your dad”.  She responded with a mischevious grin and I knew we were in business.

The kids all got these cool stars that lit up and changed colors.  I wanted one!

We were told not to expect much dancing……that turned out to be completely NOT true!   They tore it up!  This photo of Christie & Craig’s parents is one of my faves.  I took several more conventional ones, but his hand and the saxophones in the background just do it for me.  Love it!

Erika surprised us by asking for a picture…..of EVERYONE.  Yay, an excuse to pull out our lights!  :)  Of course the outtake is my favorite:

Christie is the one on the far left who’s giggling - her husband is behind her with his hands raised.  She told us she’s not photogentic - are you kidding me?  Christie, you’re beautiful, you are nuts!

Thanks again to Christie for recommending us, and thank you to Erika & Craig for having us document your reception.  We had a great time!

Jim + Nicole: Married!

It pays to be friends with a wedding photographer.  Or in the case of Nicole & Jim, it pays to be the friend of a friend of two wedding photographers.  Jim plays in Caren’s band, who in addition to being a kick-ass friend of mine is also a kick-ass drummer.  We got a call on a Thursday night asking if we would shoot Jim & Nicole’s wedding taking place the next day.  Just a warning to the brides out there, this is what happens when you leave the groom in charge of securing the photographer!  Nicole had checked our work out months ago and told Jim to book us…..and I guess technically he did…..just 24 hours before! Hehe.

Nicole getting ready - I absolutely love this picture.  I took it, but Andy did an awesome job with the processing.

I am going to let you all in on a secret:  Jim and Nicole have been married for awhile, but they never got a chance to do it up right the first time, so they decided to take the opportunity to celebrate properly.  This didn’t affect the enthusiasm of the guests though - it was downright crowded around the altar, with many friends and family members clustered around the couple to take pictures and video.

After the ceremony we did some formal portraits outside.  There wasn’t time to travel to a secondary location, so we had to wing it.  Andy rocked out the groomsmen portraits while I concentrated on the ladies.

This adorable flower girl is the daughter of the bride and groom.

Before ducking inside for the reception, we had to do some “band” photos of Jim, Caren, her boyfriend Eric, and their bassist, Rob:

There is a whole slideshow of these photos here, if you are interested.

Back inside, it was time for the toasts:

How awesome are Nicole’s eyelashes in that picture?!?!

Dad toasting the bride & groom:

We decided to set up off-camera lighting on the dancefloor and got some beautifully backlit shots:

I loved their daughter’s reaction as she sat on the sidelines during the first dances:

This event was all about the party, so I have to include some dance shots.

The lady in the foreground of this picture just totally does it for me.  I crack up everytime I see it.

Finally, if you know me, you know I have a thing for the ring shots.  These are some of my favorite to date.

Both of these we actually taken at the deserted head table while the party was in full swing.  I think some of the guests were wondering what the heck I was doing.  I actually had the rings placed on the stems of their champagne flutes, but it’s so close up you can’t really tell.

Finally, I love this last one because it’s just so elegant and classic:

Jim & Nicole - thanks so much for letting us spend the day with you, we had a great time!  And thanks to Caren for referring us.

Want to see more?  Check out the slideshow from this weddding.

Sneak Peek: Elisha + Brian

Elisha & Brian are married!  We were honored to spend the day with them at the beautiful Fore Lakes Golf Club in Kimball, MI.  Elisha is the calmest, most laid back bride I’ve ever seen, even when someone in the bridal party was MIA until literally a minute before the ceremony started!

I love cake shots and I think these are some of our favorites to date.  Elisha had candles everywhere, I pity the poor staff member who had to light them all!  But the reception room looked amazing.  You’ll see even more when I put up a proper post with more images.

The venue they chose was terrific.  Wait till you see the amazing shots we got as the sun was setting, with the reflection off the water.  :)

This couple is freaking gorgeous.  ‘Nuff said.

Red roses everywhere.  Simple and classic.

I took a lot of ring shots, but this one is one of my favorites.  I stole the rings and went into the foyer during the reception, which prompted a bunch of “OMG, they let you take the rings?!?” comments from the Fore Lakes staff.  I have to admit, handling the rings always scares the crap out of me.  I always envision accidentally dropping one and watching it roll into a storm drain that magically appears out of nowhere.  I don’t think I breathe until they are safely back in the hands of the bride & groom and away from my klutzy self.

We’ve got a lot more pictures coming!  Elisha & Brian’s friends and family were great - everyone was so respectful of us and what we were trying to accomplish, even asking if it was okay if they used flash on their own cameras.  That *never* happens!  It was a beautiful day and we were delighted to be part of it.  Thanks again to both of you and good luck on your move to Lansing!

Sneak Peek: Jim & Nicole

Eeeeek! Talk about a last minute affair! We booked Jim & Nicole’s wedding the night before! (Ladies, this is what happens when you put the groom in charge of something!) Hehe, seriously though, Jim & Nicole are friends of friends and when we knew they were in a pinch we had to help them out.

We’ve had a small computer meltdown here that has slowed us down a bit, so while we finish the rest of our editing, here are a couple of my current favorites:

This hankerchief was a family heirloom so I had to get a shot with the rings on it.  I really love the way this looks in black and white.   Instant classic.

Thanks Nicole & Jim for giving us the opportunity to document your day.  Your proofs will be up soon, I promise!  :)

Sanaa Turns Two!

Last Saturday I had the opportunity to photograph Sanaa’s birthday party at the Detroit Zoo. Sanaa was a bit shy with me at first. When her mom’s friend asked her to lie on her belly so I could get some shots, she immediately obliged, but decided to face the opposite direction!

How cute is that??!?!!

I have to admit, I was a little nervous going into this shoot because it’s been awhile since I’ve worked with kids. Andy, being a daddy, has a distinct advantage here. But I have to say I’m really excited about several of the shots I got that day:

As the guests started to arrive I heard Sanaa’s mom get really excited and grabbed this shot of being reunited with her niece - who was a surprise guest. She was SO happy to see her - the niece lived in New Jersey and I have a feeling it had been many years. The poor niece wasn’t quite sure what all the fuss was about I think! But I love this image of the moment they saw each other:

I’m a sucker for the details, and while this shot isn’t really of anything in particular, I just love the colors.

After Pin the Tail on the Donkey and a pinata game, the kids were given goodie bags to rip apart. Among the treasures were some harmonicas. This shot just cracks me up:

After the party ended, I followed the family for a little bit as they made their way to the polar bear exhibit. It was pretty crowded inside - and it didn’t help that it had started raining and this was the only location with a roof nearby. We got some great shots before the weather got so bad that we had to call it quits.

You can’t really tell at this small size, but in the photo in the right it had started to rain. Dad was hunkering down to get indoors, but Sanaa was just happy to go along for the ride. She finally decided the weirdo with the camera was ok and decided to give me some more smiles.

Many thanks to Sanaa’s mom, Aziza and the rest of the family for inviting me to capture this special day. It was a blast! Sanaa has a little sister on the way that will no doubt be just as adorable as she is. We are looking forward to meeting them again for more pictures. :)

Chris and Jess are engaged!

This photo IS exactly what it loos like - A PROPOSAL! Meet Chris and Jess. Chris is the son of a good friend of mine, and this weekend my friend and I were participating in a local garden tour - she had her garden open, and I was exhibiting some photographs in it. During the day, Chris wanders in with the engagement ring. He announced that he was going to propose either that night or the following evening.

Naturally, I scooped the ring up and got some nice close-ups (which I really need to post later!) and started hinting that the trendy thing to do now is to have your proposal photographed. (Hint Hint.) I didn’t think my message was sinking in, but he later came back and asked if Andy and I would be willing to do to it. Well DUH, of course!

We were told the approximate time and location, and got there early to stake it out. We assumed we’d be shooting from a distance to remain discreet, and had our long lenses out. We waited. And waited. But we didn’t see Chris or Jess. Finally I see someone near the water, a bit farther away than were we had discussed. And he’s waving at us crazily. My heart dropped and my first thought was “oh crap, we missed it”. I was SO bummed out. We run over there and Chris comes up to us, just out of earshot of Jess and says “ok, I told her I surprised her with a portrait session for our anniversary, but I’m going to do it as soon as you start taking pictures”. Oh yeah, NO pressure there! We start scrambling, now our telephoto lenses are way too long since we are 3ft away. We play it up and start taking “test” shots and Chris immediately goes down on one knee.

Now let me just pause here and say that this really is a remarkable couple, and I’m not just saying that because it’s my friend’s kid. I don’t know all the details exactly, but Jess has fought off brain cancer twice. She’s had numerous surgeries and had to deal with stuff that no person in her 20’s should ever have to think about. Throughout all this, Chris has been by her side for 7 years.  They have an amazing connection.

We were very excited to get the opportunity to capture a proposal - I mean how often does THAT happen?!? After playing paparazzi for a few minutes, we excused ourselves and went back to Chris’ mom’s house - where a totally unrelated party was going on. We threw together a quick slideshow and by the time the newly engaged couple arrived we had it ready to go and playing outside so everybody could see the whole thing.

Congrats to both of you!  We feel so lucky to have been able to document this and we can’t wait to shoot the wedding!
