Yesterday we had the pleasure of photographing one of our past brides at the Westin Book-Cadillac in downtown Detroit.  We could have stayed there all day, it was so much fun!  There are so many great areas to explore and we really didn’t even scratch the surface.  I’ll be posting quite a few more photos in a few days, but I had to share at least one tonight.  Special thanks to DeVawn DeBono for providing hair & make-up.  And of course, thank you to Meredith for being a stunning model, and getting us access at the hotel.   More details and photos about this session to come!  :)

Winter Beauty

We had an amazing time this past Friday working on a top-secret project with some of Southeastern Michigan’s top wedding talent.  I don’t know if I’m allowed to reveal all the details right now, as we are seeking to get images published, but I had to share at least one image that I didn’t think would give too much away.  We were working on a concept shoot that included a gorgeous tablescape, un-freaking-believably beautiful models (see above), and a storybook location (River Birch Lodge).  We were just one part of a team that included a wedding coordinator-turned-Art Director/Stylist, florist, hair & make-up artists, a videographer, invitation designer, and probably more that I’m forgetting.

Can’t wait to blog about it in detail and share a LOT more photos.  This was such a joy for us to take part in and a great opportunity for us to flex our creative muscles, pull lenses out of our bags we don’t use as often, and play.  BIG HUGE THANKS to Lindsey of Lindsey Nartker Designs for inviting us along, putting together an amazing concept, and recruiting an awesome team to make our part of the equation effortless.  :)

Engaged: Amanda & Jeff

We always enjoy challenging ourselves, and when Amanda & Jeff were only available to come out during one of the coldest weeks of winter, we had to figure out a way to meet their needs without all of us freezing our butts off.  As luck would have it,  we have a great community in Metro Detroit of helpful wedding vendors, and when our friends at Mod 4 Photographic invited us to use the studio at their Intergalactic Headquarters, we knew we’d be fools to say no.  So the images that follow are a bit different from our norm, because they are shot all indoors and with studio lights.  This was really fun for us in a very nerdy way because it’s completely different from the way we normally approach our engagement sessions.  While location shooting is really fun, I think I could get used to the studio life.  Just sayin! :)

I am in love with the colors in this series and how adorable Amanda is.  SO glad she wore that scarf! :)

Amanda & Jeff – thanks so much for coming down to visit with us.  These images were really fun for us since it made us change up the way we normally work.  Thanks for your patience as we ironed out the kinks in our set-ups. :)

Amanda & Jeff will be getting married at the beginning of June, but we’ll be seeing them on February 14th when Jeff’s cousin is getting married!

64 Square Inches of Awesome

Our new samples albums have finally started trickling in, and I’m so excited to share them!  First up is a two-tone leather 8×8 flush mount album featuring Meredith & Mike’s beautiful wedding at St. Ambrose & the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club.  I have been smitten with that silvery embossed leather since we got our album company’s swatches, so it was kind of a no brainer to choose this cover.  We paired it with a super soft blue suede and it looks even better in person. I LOVE petting this album.  I seriously took it out of the box every night for the first week we had it just so I could admire it.  It pained me to finally drop it off at the studio.

While I have posted before about some of our other albums, this actually the first flush mount I’ve put on the blog.  For those of you who don’t know the lingo, there are three major types of wedding albums:

  • Traditional Matted Album: Photographic prints of various sizes are put in mats and then assembled into a book.  This is the book most of our mothers have from their weddings. They are beautiful and classic, and still available, though flush mount albums are the trend right now.
  • Press Printed “Coffee Table” Style Book: This book is printed on a printing press, and the quality, while still quite good, is not quite as impressive as a true photographic print.  These books have thin pages, typical of a book you’d get at a bookstore.  Our “coffee table” books have a hinged binding which allows the page to lay flat.  I think this is so much better than the traditional binding because you can see all of the page.  We love these books for sign-in books or parent albums.
  • Flush Mount: This style book is also known as a “digital album”, but that term annoys me, because a book is NOT digital!  A flush mount is made up of true photographic prints, but usually the pages are designed, so there may be multiple photos, white space, collages, etc.  The entire print is then bound to mat board, then the whole thing is trimmed and hand-assembled into a book.  Each page seamlessly runs to the edge, and the gutter (the center of the book) is very minimal or practically non-existant, when the print is folded.

Okay, I lied, there is one more type of book.

  • Mounted Album: This style book is very similar to the flush mount, but instead of the print being mounted to the page prior to assembly, the book is put together and the prints are added afterwards.  Instead of the prints going flush to the edge of the page, there’s a small area around each print where the underlying mat board is visible.  This is still a fine quality book, but a little more economical than a flush mount.

Okay, so blah, blah, blah, where was I?  Oh yeah, so this book = 64 square inches of awesome.  Or actually, since it opens to a 16×8 image, maybe it’s actually 128 square inches of awesome.  This book feels heavy and lovely in your hands.  It’s substantial.  It’s got a bit of attitude.  The pages are thick and sturdy, and it opens flat so you can see every bit of every image.

This picture shows what I mean about the images going flush to the edge of the pages.  Also, the image on the bottom right does a great job of showing how smooth the two fabrics flow together.  In all honesty, I was a little worried about this combination, because this particular leather is really thick and the suede is a lot thinner.  But the join is smooth and beautiful.  I was really impressed.

Here’s one more to show you what I mean:

See how the pages open up flat?  That is a good thing!  :)

blank 64 Square Inches of AwesomeRound & Flat Spine Comparison

Finally, here is a comparison of a round spine versus a flat spine.  Our album company offers both styles, though for some speciality cover options, they can only do the flat spine.  I think the round spine looks great with the leather covers though, it makes the book look even more substantial and unique.  The cover is lightly padded as well, which gives it a luxurious feel.

We really took our time and did our homework before we settled on an album company to work with.  And I have to say, we are really happy with the choice we made.  All of our albums are made-to-order here in the USA, and are assembled by hand.  Each one is a unique creation – there’s no warehouse with a bunch of pre-assembled books lying around.  There is a staggering number of cover materials and color options so you can choose something that’s truly unique and fits your style.  They also offer metal and acrylic covers, as well as canvas, and glass, and well, the list goes on!  (We have a 12×12 with a metal cover due to arrive this week, and I’m sure it will be up on the blog soon.)

The one other thing that makes each album unique is that every album is custom designed.  We design every album from scratch, without using templates.  It’s just one more way we make your album uniquely yours.  Below is a sampling of some of the spreads in this 8 x 8 book.

In case you can’t tell, I’m SUPER HAPPY about this book.  I have always been a bookworm, and bookbinding fascinates me.  Seeing our work so beautifully bound and in such an attractive package just makes me ridiculously happy.  It’s very gratifying to us personally, so I can only imagine how exciting it is for our clients.  We will be sharing both more sample albums and actual client albums this year on the blog, and I can’t wait.  :)

Say it with me now:  Awwwwwwwww. Seriously, how cute are they?  I love this image – the colors, the birdhouse, and how snuggley Elizabeth and Sam look. After careful consideration, I’ve decided “snuggley” is the right word here, whether it’s a real word or not!   Elizabeth grew up just a few streets away from us in Grosse Pointe Park and Sam is from Cadillac, MI.  They are both about to start careers as pediatric dentists, an industry where being cute and snuggley is definitely a bonus, I would think.  I am still a little bitter about the scary man my mom used to take me to, who told me, at 7 years old, that I would be in braces for “at least 10 years”.  Guess what?  My teeth grew in perfectly straight, so there! But the point I was trying to make is these two are adorable, and funny, and sweet, and they are totally the type of people my mom should have taken me to.  Okay then.

Also, before I go off on another tangent, let me just give a shout out to Columbus, OH photographer Andrea Roberts.  Her husband goes to school with Elizabeth, and when she was shopping for a photographer, Andrea helped review her choices and gave us the seal of approval!  Thanks Andrea!  (And if you are googling “Columbus” and “photography” and found this post, DO check out her site, her work is fabulous!)  :)

blank Engaged: Elizabeth & Sam | Grosse Pointe, MIFall Engagement Session in Grosse Pointe Park, MI

The “dip” shot on the right is collectively one of my favorites, one of Andy’s favorites, and one of Elizabeth & Sam’s favorites.  When we met up to design their Save the Date card, Sam reminded us that we never would have got this shot if Elizabeth hadn’t lost her keys.  I had completely forgot.  About 5 minutes into our engagement session, Elizabeth realized she had left her keys on her dad’s car.  Only one problem – her dad had left the house.   So we all started looking up and down the street, and we ended up getting these two shots.  (And the keys were found, turned out they were on top of her mom’s car, and she had left too, but another motorist saw them fall and returned them to her.  Happy ending for the keys, happy ending for our photo.  Everyone wins.)  Images like the ones above are one of the reasons I moved to Grosse Pointe Park.  We have the most amazing trees ever and I LOVE fall in this town.

After spending some time at Elizabeth’s house, we headed over to Patterson Park. We did another session there back in the spring and it’s interesting to see how different the place looks in autumn.  Sam & Elizabeth were kind enough to do our bidding, even if that meant lying down in semi-damp grass.

Finally, I’ll end this with another one of my favorites.  The colors in this image are just yummy.  :)

Elizabeth & Sam will be tying the knot this August, with their wedding and reception in Grosse Pointe.   We are very excited for their wedding, and we are also excited that they will be moving back to town once they finish up their dental training.  Looking forward to bumping into you guys again soon!  :)
